Why Toxic People Study You Before They Control You | The Red Flags You Missed

Sometimes the beginning of a toxic relationship feels almost magical.

They listen closely. They remember the details. They want to know what makes you happy, what you've been through, what you're afraid of, and what you've always wanted from a relationship.

It can feel like, “Finally, someone truly sees me.”

But with a manipulative person, some of that attention can serve another purpose: learning where they can gain influence.

They may discover that you fear abandonment, so withdrawal becomes powerful. They learn that you're compassionate, so guilt works. They recognize that you're loyal, so they test how much you'll tolerate.

Your kindness wasn't the problem.

The lesson isn't to become cold, suspicious, or afraid of intimacy. It's to learn that healthy people use what they know about you to love you better—not to control you better.

That's one of the reasons I wrote Your Worth Was Never Negotiable: Healing From the Toxic Relationships That Made You Forget Who You Are.
