Healing often brings uncomfortable clarity. You may recognize moments when you reacted poorly, said hurtful things, or made mistakes—and that realization can leave you wondering, “Was I the toxic one?”
Taking responsibility for your behavior is a sign of growth, but it does not erase what was done to you. In toxic relationships, prolonged manipulation, criticism, and emotional pressure can cause you to respond from fear, anger, or survival. Your reaction may need to be accountable, but it does not make the other person’s repeated harmful behavior acceptable.
Two truths can exist at once: you can own what you did wrong, and they can still be responsible for the toxic pattern they created. Accountability is not about carrying all the blame. It is about learning, making amends where appropriate, and choosing healthier responses moving forward.
My upcoming book, Your Worth Was Never Negotiable: Healing From the Toxic Relationships That Made You Forget Who You Are, will help you separate genuine accountability from the false guilt that keeps you trapped.
