Before anything was ever taken from you, you were studied.

In 1981 two researchers filmed sixty people walking down a New York sidewalk. Ordinary people on their way to work. Then they showed that footage to men in prison for violent assault and asked one question. Which of these would you pick?

The inmates agreed with each other. They pointed at the same people.

They were not reading fear. Most of those people were thinking about lunch. The inmates were reading something in how a person moved, and from a few seconds of silent video they were deciding who could be taken.

Here is what I need you to hear.

They were not looking for weakness. They were looking for access.

What draws a predatory person is not that you are pathetic. It is that you are reachable. You are kind on reflex. You explain yourself instead of leaving. You are loyal past the point of evidence. You want to be understood more than you want to be comfortable.

Not one of those is a flaw.

You were not targeted because something was wrong with you. You were targeted because something was right with you, and it was worth something to someone who had no intention of paying for it.

In Chapter 3 I compare it to a Siberian tiger. Eight hundred pounds, and it almost never chases anything. It learns the ground first. It reads the wind. It waits in the cover to close the last forty feet. The knowledge comes first. The violence takes minutes.

And after the kill it does not eat everything at once. It drags the body into cover where nothing else can see, and returns to feed for days, covering the remains in between.

That is why you were not destroyed in one night. The good weeks were not the real person breaking through. The good weeks were maintenance.

This is not only about women. I have sat with men who could have ended any confrontation in their house in four seconds, and who had not told one person in nine years.

Jesus said be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. He never said stop being a dove.

You did not need armor. You needed information.
